Tax Relief for La Cañada Flintridge & La Crescenta Mudslide Victims

According to Pasadena Star-News, on Tuesday the state Franchise Tax board announced a special tax relief for mudslide victims of La Cañada Flintridge and La Crescenta that were affected by mudslides and flooding. The declaration allows for these residents to claim disaster losses in the current or prior tax year.

Taxpayers claiming the disaster losses should write "California Winter Storms 2010" in red ink at the top of their tax return to alert the Franchise Tax Board to expedite the refund. Taxpayers can get Franchise Tax Board forms for the 2009 tax return or amended 2009 tax return at Franchise Tax Board.

Taxpayers needing copies of lost or damaged state returns should complete Form FTB3516, "Request for Copy of Tax Return," available online. Make sure to write "California Winter Storms 2010" in red ink at the top of the request to receive free copies.

For more information about disaster losses, refer to FTB 1034 "Disaster Loss" at Franchise Tax Board, or the IRS 547, "Casualites, Disasters, and Thefts" at Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayers who have questions can call the Franchise Tax Board toll-free at (800) 852-5711 from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday.
